Accra, Ghana – Dikembe Mutombo, the iconic NBA center known for his defensive prowess, humanitarian work, and infectious smile, passed away on Monday at the age of 58. Mutombo had been battling brain cancer for several years.
Mutombo, a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, spent 18 seasons in the league with teams including the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, and Houston Rockets. His towering presence on the court and signature finger-wag celebration endeared him to fans worldwide.
Beyond his basketball accomplishments, Mutombo was renowned for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo. He founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, which has built hospitals, schools, and community centers in Africa.
