Nigeria Prepares for 3 Days of Thunderstorms, Flood Risk

Abuja, September 29, 2024 – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flood alert for the country, warning of heavy thunderstorms and potential flooding in the coming days.

According to NiMet’s forecast, thunderstorms are expected to sweep across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday. The northern regions will be particularly affected, with localized storms predicted in states such as Kaduna, Zamfara, Kebbi, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa.

The central and southern parts of the country will also experience thunderstorms, with potential flooding in major cities due to heavy rainfall. States like Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Imo, Enugu, Ekiti, Edo, Ebonyi, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, Abia, and Oyo are all at risk.

NiMet urged residents to avoid flood-prone areas and heed safety advisories issued by local authorities. The agency also encouraged the public to stay updated on the weather forecast through its official channels.
