Accra, Ghana – Renowned actor Idris Elba is set to take on the iconic role of Okonkwo in a forthcoming television series adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s acclaimed novel, “Things Fall Apart.” The project is being developed by A24, with Elba also serving as an executive producer alongside his production company, 22Summers.
The series will delve into the epic tale of Okonkwo, a fearless warrior and leader grappling with the encroachment of British colonialism on his people and culture. Elba’s portrayal of the complex character is expected to bring Achebe’s timeless masterpiece to life in a new and compelling way.
Joining Elba as executive producers are Gina Carter, David Oyelowo, Amanda N’Duka, Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks. While no writer has been attached to the project yet, the series is currently in development and is not associated with any particular streaming service or network.
“Things Fall Apart” has been celebrated as one of the greatest novels of all time, having been translated into over 60 languages and garnering prestigious awards such as the Nigerian National Merit Award and the Man Booker International Prize. The novel is the first installment in Achebe’s African Trilogy, followed by “No Longer at Ease” and “Arrow of God.”
Elba, known for his roles in acclaimed films like “Beasts of No Nation,” “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” and “The Harder They Fall,” brings a wealth of experience to the project. His previous television credits include starring roles in “Luther,” “The Wire,” and “Hijack,” as well as his work as a creator and star of “Turn Up Charlie” and “In the Long Run.”
David Oyelowo, who will also serve as an executive producer, recently starred in and produced the Paramount+ series “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” He is also attached to the upcoming Apple TV+ series “Government Cheese,” and has previously produced films such as “The Water Man” and “A United Kingdom.”
