Lesotho’s Prime Minister, Samuel Matekane, participated in the Summit of the Future at the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2024. Joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Lejone Mpotjoana, Communications Minister Nthati Moorosi, and Finance Minister Dr. Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane, Matekane urged for an overhaul of global governance, emphasizing the need for increased development financing and youth inclusion.

The Summit of the Future gathered world leaders, scientists, and policymakers to address global challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and technological disruption. The summit produced the “Pact for the Future” and annexed the Global Digital Compact and Declaration on Future Generations.

Dr. Matlanyane also represented Lesotho in an interactive dialogue titled “Transforming Global Governance: Turbocharging the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda.” She stressed the importance of financing for achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) amid growing global challenges, calling for more domestic and international funding and political will for effective cooperation.

Additionally, Lesotho hosted a side event focused on its National Digital Transformation Strategy, in collaboration with Singapore and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The event sought support from development partners and the private sector for the strategy’s implementation, attracting dignitaries from Singapore, Kenya, and UN agencies.
