Bamako, Mali – Heavy gunfire was heard early Tuesday morning in Mali’s capital, Bamako, causing panic among residents.
The shooting began around 5:30 AM local time and was reported in several neighborhoods, including areas near the main international airport. People heading to mosques for morning prayers were forced to turn back as the gunfire erupted.
The source of the shooting remains unclear, although some residents reported hearing gunfire coming from the direction of the airport or the gendarmerie.
Mali has been grappling with an Islamist insurgency that has spread across the Sahel region in recent years. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people.
Despite efforts by the military to push back the militants, violence against civilians has continued to escalate. This has led to growing frustration with the authorities and contributed to two coups in Mali, as well as coups in neighboring countries.
The juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have turned to Russia for support, including mercenaries from the Wagner private army. However, jihadist attacks have persisted, highlighting the challenges faced by the governments in restoring security.
Recent clashes between Tuareg rebels and the Malian army, which resulted in heavy losses for the military, have further destabilized the region. The fighting has also exposed the vulnerabilities of the government and its reliance on foreign support.
