Nsanje, Malawi – President Lazarus Chakwera has approved K225 million for the reconstruction of Mpatsa Primary School, which was completely destroyed by Cyclone Freddy earlier this year. The devastating cyclone swept through the region, leaving thousands homeless and causing widespread damage to infrastructure.
Mpatsa Primary School bore the brunt of the storm, with classrooms and administrative buildings buried under mounds of debris. This forced students to continue their education under makeshift tents, creating a challenging learning environment.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), in collaboration with Nsanje District Council and humanitarian partners, has been providing temporary shelter and support to the affected community.
President Chakwera emphasized the importance of education in the recovery process, stating that the reconstruction of the school is essential for the future of the children. He pledged the government’s commitment to rebuilding not only physical structures but also the lives and communities affected by the cyclone.
