Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera will visit Mozambique from August 14th to 15th, 2024, in an effort to strengthen ties between the two nations. During his two-day official trip to Maputo, President Chakwera will engage in high-level discussions with Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, focusing on enhancing trade and improving the movement of goods and people between the countries.
The visit is expected to result in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) covering key areas of cooperation, including the formalization of petroleum product transportation and further integration of the 41-megawatt electricity interconnection initiated in 2022. The MOU aims to solidify and expand economic collaboration between Malawi and Mozambique.
In recognition of his contributions to fostering bilateral relations, President Chakwera will receive an Honorary Doctorate in International Relations and Leadership from Joaquim Chissano University. The renewed cooperation between the two nations is anticipated to boost trade, advance infrastructure projects like the Nacala railway refurbishment, and ease the movement of people across their borders.
