First Lady Monica Chakwera has inaugurated a solar-powered water reservoir at Lisoka Trading Centre in Khongoni, a project aimed at providing clean water to communities in the area. The reservoir, valued at K150 million, was donated by the Muslim World League (MWL) and is expected to significantly improve access to potable water for residents.
Chakwera highlighted the reservoir’s role in easing the daily burden on women and children who previously had to walk long distances to collect water. She acknowledged the project as a crucial step toward ensuring a healthier future for the community.
Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Mia revealed that the 30,000-litre reservoir will serve six surrounding villages, providing a sustainable water source. She called for further collaboration with the MWL to address additional challenges facing the country, including those related to climate change.
Dr. Muhammad Bin Abdulkarim Al Issa, Secretary General of the MWL, expressed the organization’s continued commitment to supporting such initiatives in Malawi. Senior Chief Khongoni also expressed gratitude for the project, noting that it addresses a critical water shortage that had plagued the area.
