Lampedusa – The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and UNICEF have called for increased support for vulnerable migrants, particularly children, arriving on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Despite a decline in overall migrant arrivals compared to last year, the Central Mediterranean route remains a deadly passageway, with nearly 900 deaths recorded so far in 2024.
While praising Italy’s efforts in transferring migrants from the overcrowded island, the UN agencies emphasized the need for specialized care for unaccompanied minors and other vulnerable individuals. They urged authorities to implement child-friendly identification procedures and ensure adequate support services.
The Central Mediterranean route continues to be a primary entry point for migrants seeking refuge in Europe. Over 30,000 people, including 3,700 unaccompanied children, have arrived in Italy by sea since the beginning of the year.
UNHCR officials attributed the ongoing crisis to factors such as conflict, climate change, and economic hardship in African countries. They also highlighted the growing challenges posed by racism and xenophobia towards refugees and migrants.
The agencies stressed the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address the root causes of migration and to provide safe and legal pathways for those seeking protection.
