Labour officials from 10 African countries have gathered in Doha, Qatar this week for a four-day capacity-building programme aimed at improving protections for African migrant workers in Arab States.
The training, led by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITC-ILO), and Germany’s development agency GIZ under its “Shaping Development-Oriented Migration” (MEG) programme, began earlier this week. Participants include labour attachés, consular officers, and diaspora desk officers from Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, Uganda, South Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, and Nigeria.
Held in the Qatari capital, the programme seeks to strengthen labour migration governance, promote workers’ rights, and improve safety nets for African migrants working in the Gulf region.
Officials attending the event are being equipped with the tools to better enforce international labour standards and advocate for the fundamental rights of African workers abroad.
