Rwandan communities living abroad have begun voting in the 2024 general elections, with the first ballot cast in New Zealand at midnight Kigali time on Saturday. Winnie Mbabazi, the first voter, expressed her excitement about contributing to her country’s development.
By Sunday morning, Rwandan embassies worldwide were sharing updates on social media about the voting process. The Rwandan embassy in Sweden noted early morning voters in the Nordic countries.
To ensure widespread participation, 160 polling stations have been set up globally, including multiple locations in the USA and Australia.
In South Korea, Rwandans cast their votes on July 14. In China, Rwanda’s Ambassador James Kimonyo voted in Beijing. Rwandans in Saudi Arabia voted at the embassy in Riyadh, and large numbers turned out in Kenya. Voting also took place at the Rwandan Embassy in The Hague, Netherlands, and at a polling station in Germany.
