Lusaka, Zambia – Zambia’s Vice President, Mrs. W.K. Mutale Nalumango, led the nation’s celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) of the African Union (AU).

Nalumango, representing President Hakainde Hichilema, praised ECOSOCC for its unwavering focus on the people of Africa. She highlighted Zambia’s pride in hosting the organization’s headquarters in Lusaka and pledged continued support for a thriving civil society that shapes a brighter future for all Africans.

“This ceremony underscores our unwavering commitment to unity, solidarity, and cooperation,” said the Vice President.

She emphasized the legacy of Africa’s independence fighters, urging continued efforts toward a more integrated and prosperous continent. Nalumango pointed to Zambia’s role as a founding member of the AU and its predecessor, the Organization of African Unity, highlighting the nation’s commitment to the AU’s vision of a peaceful, integrated, and prosperous Africa.

The Vice President stressed the importance of civil society engagement in achieving the ambitious goals outlined in Agenda 2063, the AU’s strategic framework for the continent’s transformation. She lauded the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in bridging the gap between citizens and the AU in areas of development, governance, and peacebuilding.

Nalumango encouraged ECOSOCC to remain a powerful platform for citizens and the diaspora to participate in implementing Agenda 2063. She underscored the legitimacy granted by the AU’s Constitutive Act, which empowers ECOSOCC to offer advisory opinions on emerging issues to the continental body and its organs.

The Vice President reaffirmed Zambia’s dedication to fostering regional and continental integration, promoting economic growth and development, strengthening democratic governance and human rights, and empowering youth and women.

The ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Permanent Secretary for International Relations and Cooperation Ms. Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, ECOSOCC Presiding Officer Mr. Khalid Boudali, Dean of the African Group of Ambassadors His Excellency Mr. Religious Siyave Haindongo, and others.
