Zambia and Turkey have taken a bold step towards strengthening their educational ties with the handover of Kabulonga Trust School to the Türkiye Maarif Foundation. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 4th, 2024, marks a new chapter in educational cooperation between the two countries.

Previously known as Horizon Nursery, Primary, and Secondary School, Kabulonga Trust School was formerly operated by the Fethullah Gulen Movement (FETO). The Zambian government’s decision to hand over the school reflects their acknowledgement of the importance Turkey places on regaining control of such institutions.

Hon. Mulambo Haimbe, Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, signed the MoU on behalf of Zambia. He expressed Zambia’s commitment to fostering a deeper bilateral relationship that benefits both nations. The Minister also emphasized the importance of this MoU in revitalizing educational ties and called for a review of all existing MoUs between Zambia and Turkey. This review aims to assess progress in various areas of cooperation and explore avenues to increase trade volume, which currently stands at a fraction of Turkey’s global trade figures.

Türkiye Maarif Foundation President, Prof. Dr. Birol Akgün, expressed his honor at the partnership. He highlighted the Foundation’s dedication to providing high-quality education and fostering educational excellence. Dr. Akgün emphasized their commitment to bringing innovative educational practices and resources to Zambian students and teachers, ultimately enriching their learning experiences.

The Maarif Foundation, already operating in 52 countries worldwide, is poised to welcome Zambia as their 53rd beneficiary nation. With a presence in Africa and a focus on educating over 200,000 students globally, the Foundation brings a wealth of experience to the table.

Dr. Akgün concluded by expressing his gratitude to the Zambian government for facilitating this partnership. He voiced his confidence that this collaboration will have a lasting positive impact on both countries.
