ABUJA, July 7 – The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu has been reelected as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
His first tenure will elapse on July 9, 2024 but has been reelected for another one-year by a unanimous decision of fellow Heads of Government at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday. He has appointed the President of Senegal to join in the mediation with Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad.
While delivering his acceptance speech, Tinubu emphasized that to counter insecurity and stabilise the region, recommendations forwarded by ministers of defence must be met. He urged members states of the region to fulfil their financial commitments to the regional body to address security challenges.
President Tinubu also called on ECOWAS member states to unite and develop innovative strategies to unlock the region’s economic potential and promote prosperity.
He acknowledged the economic challenges hindering progress and emphasized the need for partnerships, investment, and infrastructure development.
