Cape Town, South Africa – The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) is making a history-making visit to South Africa this week, marking their first port call in the country since their establishment after World War II.
The public will have a chance to step aboard the JMSDF training ships, JS Kashima and JS Shimakaze, on Thursday, July 4th. Tours will be offered from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the E and F Berths of the Port of Cape Town.
The day’s festivities will also include a joint music concert by the JMSDF and South African Navy bands, featuring a special Taiko (Japanese drum) performance by the JMSDF, alongside a martial arts exhibition.
A Chance to Learn and Celebrate
This port call serves a dual purpose. For the JMSDF, it’s part of a larger Overseas Training Cruise designed to provide valuable on-the-job experience for trainee officers and foster international cooperation. For the public, it’s an opportunity to learn about the JMSDF, experience Japanese culture through music and martial arts, and celebrate the strong relationship between Japan and South Africa.
The ships are scheduled to depart Cape Town on Saturday, July 6th, with a send-off performance by a local band.
