Geneva, Switzerland – July 2nd, 2024 – According to a report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) paints a grim picture for the Central African Republic (CAR), where the country’s three million children are facing the worst deprivation in the world.
Malnutrition, limited healthcare access, and ongoing instability are creating a perfect storm for a full-blown humanitarian crisis, UNICEF warned. The report details that half of CAR’s children lack basic healthcare services, and nearly 40% suffer from chronic malnutrition. Access to clean water, sanitation, and nutritious food remains scarce for a vast majority.
“The plight of the Central African Republic’s children has become painfully invisible,” said Meritxell Relano Arana, UNICEF’s representative in the CAR, highlighting the lack of global attention compared to other conflicts. “These children face the most severe and interconnected crises of any country in the world,” she added, placing CAR at the top of the list for nations at risk of a humanitarian disaster.
