President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the Opening of Parliament on 18 July 2024, coinciding with Nelson Mandela International Day, the Presidency announced on Friday. This event will convene both the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces.

The address will serve as a platform for President Ramaphosa to outline the priorities of his administration, marking an important moment for the 7th Administration. By scheduling the Opening of Parliament on this significant day, the Presidency aims to honor Mandela’s legacy and inspire actions that reflect his values and principles.

Nelson Mandela International Day, declared by the United Nations, celebrates the birthday of South Africa’s first democratic President. It calls on individuals and communities globally to engage in acts of good and to reflect on Mandela’s contributions to society.

The President’s call for the Opening of Parliament follows Section 84(2)(d) of the South African Constitution and Rule (13)(1)(a) of the Joint Rules of Parliament. This address is anticipated to set the government’s agenda for the upcoming year.
