LUSAKA, June 25 – President Hakainde Hichilema addressed the nation today from State House, outlining key measures to tackle the ongoing energy and food crisis brought on by severe drought.

The President urged government officials to manage public resources wisely, highlighting the introduction of a lifeline power supply mechanism designed to keep small businesses operational during power shortages. He announced that Maamba Collieries would soon contribute 300 megawatts to the national grid, with funding for the project already secured.

Encouraging investment in solar energy, Hichilema called on Zambians, including those in the diaspora, to consider solar energy production, emphasizing the government’s commitment to purchasing solar power from private producers. He also urged solar product companies to reduce prices, noting that import duties on these products have been zero-rated.

The British government will support Zambia with $15 million for constructing the Zambia-Tanzania Interconnector, enabling the import and export of power between the two countries and East Africa. The President highlighted the Energy Committee’s dedication to completing this project ahead of schedule.

In a move to improve government service delivery, Hichilema reversed a directive requiring government vehicles to be parked by 18:00 hours, ensuring 24/7 access to transport for civil servants. He concluded his address with a call for national unity in facing the challenges of food and energy insecurity.
