Nigerian energy company Aiteo announced the resumption of oil production at its Nembe field after a leak forced a shutdown earlier this week. The Nembe field, located in Bayelsa state and producing nearly 50,000 barrels of oil per day, is the largest of Aiteo’s operated fields.
The leak, discovered during routine operations on Monday, raised concerns as the Bayelsa region has already faced environmental damage from previous oil spills. Aiteo, which operates the field in a joint venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), took swift action to contain the leak.
“Our team worked tirelessly to address the recent incident and have implemented stricter safety measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” Aiteo said in a statement. The company expressed satisfaction in resuming production activities.
The restart of production at the Nembe field is a positive development for Aiteo, but the environmental impact of the leak remains a concern. The Nembe Creek facility also produces significant natural gas that supplies the Nigerian liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant at Bonny Island.
