Mokhotlong, Lesotho – Residents of over ten villages in Lesotho’s Phase II Highlands Water Project area received free medical consultations and screenings from a team of Chinese specialists last week. The outreach program, undertaken from May 22nd to 23rd, provided much-needed care to communities often lacking access to specialized medical services.

The team, comprised of specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, internal medicine, general surgery, and more, offered consultations and screenings for a wide range of health concerns. This proved particularly beneficial for residents in hard-to-reach areas who typically face challenges in accessing such services.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Polihali Dam contractor, Sun JV, for bringing these essential health services directly to our communities,” said Mrs. ‘Mamoloja Polihali, Chief of Ha Ramonakalali. “Their support extended beyond medical care, with transportation provided for patients and even food parcels distributed to address dietary needs.”

This outreach program was part of a larger initiative by the 18th batch of the China Medical Team in Lesotho. Based at Motebang Hospital in Leribe, the team has a long history of serving remote rural areas. “We regularly conduct outreach programs,” explained team interpreter Mr. Daniel Chen, alongside team captain Dr. Lorin Zhang. “For 27 years, the China Medical Team has partnered with the Lesotho Ministry of Health, demonstrating a strong commitment to the country’s healthcare.”

The collaboration between the LHDA, the Ministry of Health, and the Chinese medical team is a testament to their dedication to ensuring healthcare accessibility, even in Lesotho’s most remote regions. This recent medical outreach program serves as a prime example of the positive impact Phase II of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project is having on the health and well-being of surrounding communities.
