Port Shepstone, South Africa – Tributes continue to pour in for former South African Airways (SAA) chairperson Dudu Myeni, who passed away last Friday. A funeral service will be held for Myeni this Saturday, June 22nd, at the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, starting at 9:30 am.

Myeni’s passing was confirmed by the JG Zuma Foundation, where she served as chairperson. The foundation’s spokesperson, Mzwanele Manyi, requested privacy for the family as they grieve.

Politicians and Public Mourn Myeni’s Loss

News of Myeni’s passing has drawn reactions from across the South African political spectrum. EFF MP Carl Niehaus described her as a “passionate supporter” of former president Jacob Zuma and a champion for Black economic empowerment during her time at SAA.

Politician Andile Mngxithama lauded Myeni’s strong leadership and commitment to the “radical economic transformation” (RET) agenda. Social media has also been abuzz with tributes, with many remembering Myeni’s outspoken personality and dedication to her beliefs.

A Career Highlighted by Controversy

Myeni’s tenure as SAA chairperson was a period of significant financial difficulty for the airline. While some praised her efforts to transform the company, others criticized her leadership as contributing to SAA’s decline.

Myeni’s later years were marked by legal troubles. She was declared a delinquent director in 2020 and faced corruption charges alongside former Sondolo IT Director Trevor Mathenjwa. The case was postponed last month due to Myeni’s ill health.

A Life Remembered

Despite the controversies, Myeni’s life and career will be remembered for her various roles, including her work in social development programs and her service on several boards. The funeral service on Saturday is expected to draw a crowd of mourners to pay their respects.
