German automaker Volkswagen (VW) has pledged a rapid development process for its upcoming €20,000 electric vehicle (EV), aiming to set a new standard in the affordable electric car segment.
This announcement came during the company’s general meeting on Wednesday, with CEO Oliver Blume stating, “The €20,000 VW will be a benchmark in design, quality, features, and technology, all at an attractive price point. This project embodies our ‘Europe Speed’ initiative, demonstrating Volkswagen’s ability to develop quickly, efficiently, and effectively.”
The new EV, currently codenamed ID.1, boasts a significantly shorter development timeline of 36 months compared to previous models. This expedited development signifies VW’s commitment to offering the ID.1 at a competitive price point, targeting the entry-level electric car market.
“With this car, we fulfill our promise of providing accessible mobility for future generations,” Blume remarked. He further emphasized the ID.1’s alignment with the company’s core philosophy, stating, “This car embodies our brand identity – a true Volkswagen. Designed in Europe, for Europe.”
