New York, NY – May 23, 2024 – Timothy Ekesa, a prominent Kenyan advocate for children’s rights, has secured a seat on the prestigious UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. Ekesa secured the second-highest number of votes (134) in a competitive election featuring 18 candidates vying for 9 positions.
This victory marks a significant achievement for Kenya, a nation demonstrably committed to child well-being. Ekesa’s extensive experience positions him to make valuable contributions to the Committee’s work.
The Committee, comprised of 18 independent experts, oversees the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by member states. It plays a vital role in ensuring children receive essential healthcare, nutrition, and protection from violence and exploitation.
Ekesa currently serves as the Executive Director of the Kenya Alliance for Advancement of Children, a leading national children’s rights organization. Throughout his career, he has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership in child rights advocacy, research, and program management. He actively participates in international child rights initiatives and has authored numerous publications on the topic.
Ekesa’s qualifications are undeniable. He holds a Master’s degree in both Organizational Development and International Relations & Diplomacy, alongside a Diploma in Management & Development of NGOs and a Bachelor’s degree in Communications.
