GOROMONZI, Zimbabwe – A vibrant display of cultural exchange marked Africa Day in Zimbabwe this week, with a special event co-hosted by a Chinese firm and a local university.
Prospect Lithium Zimbabwe (PLZ), a subsidiary of China’s Huayou Cobalt, teamed up with the Confucius Institute at the University of Zimbabwe for the festivities held in Goromonzi, a rural community in East Mashonaland Province.
The event, held on the eve of Africa Day (May 25th), brought together traditional leaders, local government officials, representatives from PLZ, and most importantly, enthusiastic school children.
Guests were treated to a dazzling showcase of cultural performances, featuring the powerful movements of Chinese martial arts alongside the rhythmic energy of Zimbabwean traditional dance, music, and poetry.
Sheila Zvakurumbira, acting district development officer, highlighted the event’s significance in fostering closer ties between the two nations.
“This cultural exchange program strengthens the relationship between the Chinese and Zimbabweans,” Zvakurumbira remarked. “There’s a real eagerness to learn from each other’s cultures.”

University student David Nkanka echoed this sentiment, viewing the event as a symbol of the warm relations between Zimbabwe and China. “These performances beautifully illustrate the growing unity between our countries,” Nkanka said.
Beyond the captivating performances, the event offered a unique opportunity for the young participants. School children were actively engaged in experiencing Chinese calligraphy, painting, and even a taste of traditional tea.
“This is my first time trying Chinese tea,” exclaimed 16-year-old Belle Enesi. “It was delicious! I’m so happy to have had this experience.”
Africa Day commemorates the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) on May 25, 1963. It’s a day to celebrate the rich tapestry of African cultures and achievements.
