South Africa’s Border Management Authority (BMA) is bolstering the country’s border security with the deployment of 400 newly trained Junior Border Guards. These guards will be officially recognized during a pass out parade on Thursday, marking a significant step towards strengthening border control.
The new recruits completed their training at the South African Police Training College in Pretoria West. They will be deployed at various ports of entry throughout the country and will be officially designated as law enforcement officers. Their primary responsibility will be to arrest and deport illegal immigrants attempting to enter South Africa.
The BMA emphasized the importance of these new border guards, particularly in the context of South Africa’s ongoing struggle to curb illegal activity at border points. “These border guards are expected to stand firm, protecting the country’s borders with vigilance and valour,” the BMA said in a statement.
The statement further highlighted the qualities required of a South African border guard, emphasizing unwavering dedication to the nation, patriotism, and an “indomitable spirit of rejecting negative persuasion.” The BMA acknowledged the complexity of border management, stating, “Our nation’s borders are complex and therefore require discipline and courage to carry out the border management mandate.”
Commissioner of Border Management Authority, Dr Michael Masiapato, expressed his pride in the new recruits. “On the day, the nation will witness the culmination of the physical and mental training,” he said. The ceremony will showcase the guards’ capabilities and serve as a public display of support for these crucial defenders of South Africa’s sovereignty.
