President Bola Tinubu launched a sweeping campaign on Monday, advocating for inclusive education, skill development, and gender equity under the banner of #WeAreEqual. The initiative, spearheaded by the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), spans 15 African nations, with a focus on health, education, economic empowerment, and combating gender-based violence.
In Nigeria, the campaign, titled ‘Education as a Powerful Tool for Change’, is led by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady. President Tinubu, addressing the launch event at the State House, commended the dedication of African First Ladies within OAFLAD to promote gender equality and bridge the gender gap continent-wide.
“This campaign is of utmost importance for Africa,” President Tinubu remarked, extending particular praise to his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for championing education as a catalyst for nationwide change. He underscored the critical role education plays in Africa’s advancement towards gender equity and equal opportunities for all.

The President stressed the imperative of ensuring access to quality education for every child, with a special emphasis on the inclusion of girls. “We must foster a society where everyone, regardless of background, enjoys equal opportunities,” he declared, highlighting its contribution to building a stronger and more peaceful society.
President Tinubu highlighted the synchronicity of the campaign launch in Nigeria with the reintroduction of the Alternative High School for Girls, an initiative spearheaded by the First Lady. This program aims to provide a second chance for young girls who have dropped out of school, enabling them to pursue their dreams and aspirations.
“With the foundation stone laid for one of the schools in Osun State and more in progress nationwide, supported by state governments, federal agencies such as the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and other partners, we are taking concrete steps to empower our girls,” President Tinubu noted.
Drawing from his experience as Governor of Lagos State, President Tinubu highlighted the societal challenges hindering the future of young girls, including teenage pregnancy, domestic violence, human trafficking, and drug addiction.
