Liberian President Joseph Boakai has urged for enhanced bilateral relations between Liberia and Nigeria, highlighting Nigeria’s pivotal support during Liberia’s civil war from 1990 to 2003. Speaking during a visit from Olu of Orile-Ilawo, Abeokuta, Oba Alexander Macgregor, President Boakai expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s historical role as a stabilizing force in Liberia.
Vice President Jeremiah Koung, representing President Boakai, underscored Nigeria’s significant contributions to Liberia’s peace restoration efforts, particularly through the ECOMOG mission. He lauded Nigeria’s peace-building initiatives and its strides in socio-economic development across Africa.
President Boakai affirmed Liberia’s commitment to strengthening economic ties with Nigeria, emphasizing mutual benefits in fostering growth and stability. Oba MacGregor echoed President Boakai’s sentiments, advocating for an economic partnership to drive agricultural, commercial, and industrial progress.
During the visit, Oba MacGregor’s delegation extended philanthropic gestures, including a donation to the Yasmin Foundation, run by President Boakai’s son, Tan Tan Boakai. Oba MacGregor praised the foundation’s efforts and highlighted similar initiatives in Nigeria aimed at supporting disadvantaged children, widows, and orphans.
Furthermore, President Boakai reiterated Liberia’s dedication to safeguarding the rights of children and women, emphasizing education, economic empowerment, and gender inclusivity.
The royal delegation also met with Foreign Affairs Minister Sara Beysolow and Culture Ambassador Queen Juli Endee, discussing Liberia’s rich cultural heritage and potential avenues for cultural exchange between the two nations.
