South African fashion designer Thebe Magugu has unveiled “Magugu House,” a new creative space in Johannesburg that serves as a hub for his multifaceted practice.
“Magugu House becomes an institution solidifying our universe,” Magugu said in a statement.
This “Afro-encyclopaedia” embodies Magugu’s exploration of African history and heritage, similar to his earlier collections named after university subjects.
The new space will be open Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, located at 52 Bompas Road, Dunkeld in Johannesburg.
Adding to his recent success at the Met Gala, Magugu’s artistic journey continues with another prestigious acquisition. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has added a look from his AW23 “Folklorics” collection to their permanent archive.
The “shipwreck” print featured in the garment, along with a video by SHOWstudio depicting a raging sea, is displayed in the museum’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition.
“The shipwreck print allegorically speaks of sirens and the dangers of water,” explained Magugu. This marks the Costume Institute’s fourth acquisition of Magugu’s work.
