South African shoppers can now experience the global giant Amazon right at their fingertips. The e-commerce platform has officially launched its online marketplace in the country, offering a vast selection of local and international brands across 20 product categories.
To celebrate its arrival, Amazon is enticing customers with free delivery on their first order. Subsequent orders exceeding R500 (approximately $27) will also qualify for free delivery.
Accessing the marketplace is simple. Shoppers can download the Amazon Shopping App or visit the brand new website, Amazon.co.za, on their desktop or mobile devices. The platform even offers the convenience of same-day or next-day delivery for eligible purchases.
The launch comes after months of anticipation. Amazon first announced its expansion plans for South Africa in June 2022, alongside other countries. Following registration for independent sellers in October 2023, the official debut has finally arrived.
Customers can expect a smooth shopping experience with Amazon.co.za. Hassle-free returns within 30 days are facilitated through convenient options like home pickup or self-drop off points. Additionally, real-time order tracking updates are provided via WhatsApp, with customer service readily available through phone, email, and live chat.
Leading the South African charge for Amazon is Robert Koen, Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa. He assures customers of a stress-free shopping experience with “fast and reliable delivery, access to 3,000 pickup points, 24/7 customer support, and easy returns.”
The launch coincides with the onboarding of thousands of independent South African sellers, alongside established international brands like Apple and Sony. Local favorites like Masodi, Tiger Lily, Amanda-Jayne, and King Kong Leather also grace the virtual shelves, offering a diverse range of products including small kitchen appliances, home essentials, sporting goods, and consumer electronics.
Amazon has further partnered with goGOGOgo, a local brand, to provide handcrafted gift packaging for customers. This collaboration creates opportunities for local businesses while enhancing the overall shopping experience.
The launch has been met with optimism by the South African government. Minister of Small Business Development, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams, highlighted the potential for job creation and contribution to “repairing the legacy of poverty and inequality.” With a wide selection, competitive offers, and a commitment to customer convenience, Amazon is poised to shake up the South African e-commerce landscape.
