The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and fight against terrorism at a preparatory meeting for its upcoming summit in Banjul, Gambia.
Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi led his country’s delegation at the May 2nd-3rd meeting, which focused on the agenda and final declaration for the 15th Islamic Summit Conference.
Leaders from member states will convene next Saturday to discuss critical issues facing the Muslim world, including the Palestinian question, economic development, and social challenges. Additionally, the summit will address issues like hate speech, Islamophobia, and climate change.
A key outcome of the summit is expected to be a final communiqué strongly backing Somalia’s territorial integrity and its ongoing fight against terrorism. Notably, the communiqué will reject the recent memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland, a region seeking independence from Somalia.
The OIC will also emphasize the importance of material and technical assistance for strengthening Somali institutions and tackling food security challenges arising from drought. Furthermore, the summit is expected to endorse Somalia’s nomination for the African Union Commission Chairperson position.
The summit will culminate with a resolution on Palestine, Jerusalem, and the Banjul Declaration, outlining the OIC’s stance on these critical issues.
