World Record-Holder Tobi Amusan Faces Anti-Doping Rule Violation Charges, Threatening World Championship Participation

Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan, the current world record-holder in the women’s 100m hurdles, revealed on Wednesday that she has been charged with an alleged anti-doping rule violation. The charges cast doubt on her participation in the upcoming world championships scheduled for next month.

In an Instagram post, Amusan stated, “Today, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has charged me with an alleged rule violation for having three missed tests in 12 months.” The 26-year-old athlete set the world record of 12.12 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles during last year’s World Athletics Championships.

Expressing her determination, Amusan vowed to address the charges before this year’s competition, which is set to take place in Budapest. “I intend to fight this charge and will have my case decided by a tribunal of three arbitrators before the start of next month’s World Championships,” she affirmed.

Asserting her innocence, Amusan emphasized, “I am a CLEAN ATHLETE, and I am regularly—maybe more than usual—tested by the AIU. I was tested within days of my third ‘missed test.’ I have FAITH that this will be resolved in my favor, and I will be competing at the World Championships in August.”

Recently, on Sunday, Amusan participated in the Silesia Diamond League competition in Poland, where she set a new meeting record with a time of 12.34 seconds. However, during the Golden Spike athletics meet in the Czech Republic last month, she finished in third place in the women’s 100m hurdles, conceding victory to reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn from Puerto Rico, who completed the race in 12.42 seconds.

When questioned by reporters about her aspirations to improve her world record pace, Amusan confidently responded, “Nothing is impossible, and 11 seconds? Most definitely.”

However, when the discussion turned to the ongoing debate surrounding raising the height of the hurdles to prioritize technique over speed, Amusan expressed hesitation. Standing at a height of 5’1″ (156 centimeters), she urged against such a change, stating, “Don’t do that, don’t raise the hurdles. Please.”
