Tobi Amusan Shatters Records, Dominates 100m Hurdles at Silesia Diamond League

Tobi Amusan, the celebrated Nigerian athlete, has once again etched her name in the annals of track and field history. In a remarkable display of skill and speed, she secured victory in the women’s 100 meters hurdles at the highly-anticipated Silesia Diamond League held in Poland.

With sheer determination and finesse, Amusan, who currently holds the world record in this event, left her American rivals, Kendra Harrison and Ali Nia, in the dust. Crossing the finish line in an astonishing 12.34 seconds, she outpaced Harrison (12.35) and the 2019 world champion, Ali (12.38). Not only did she equal the meeting record at the Silesia Stadium in Chorzó, but she also achieved her season’s best performance.

This recent triumph adds to Amusan’s growing list of accolades. Just a fortnight ago, she secured her first Diamond League title of the year in Stockholm, Sweden. However, her journey doesn’t end here. The world awaits her highly anticipated defense of the world record in Budapest later this year.

Amusan’s exceptional abilities were on full display throughout 2022. She delivered awe-inspiring performances at the Diamond League, Commonwealth Games, and World Athletics Championships. Notably, she became the first Nigerian world champion, clocking a wind-assisted time of 12.06 seconds—a feat, albeit ineligible for a world record due to the strong +2.5 meters per second wind. Undeterred, she followed up with a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and successfully defended her Diamond League title, culminating in an extraordinary season.

Amusan’s extraordinary accomplishments garnered well-deserved recognition. In February, she received a nomination for the prestigious 2023 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award. This esteemed accolade celebrates outstanding individuals and teams in the world of sports, honoring their remarkable achievements throughout the year.
