Tinubu’s 16-Day Stint Yields Remarkable Achievements for Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria – Bola Tinubu, Nigeria’s recently inaugurated president, has wasted no time in making substantial changes that are already positively impacting the lives of Nigerians. Despite not yet appointing ministers and hundreds of advisers, President Tinubu’s accomplishments in his first 16 days in office have garnered widespread praise from both supporters and opposition members. These accomplishments, far surpassing the norm for Nigerian standards, have begun to set the stage for his administration’s transformative vision.

Since assuming office on May 29, President Bola Tinubu has taken several critical steps to address the pressing challenges facing Nigeria. From the crucial realms of security and governance to the economic and social spheres, his early actions have displayed his commitment to turning Nigeria’s socio-economic trajectory around. Let us examine the 19 key achievements within this relatively short timeframe:

  1. Met with the Service Chiefs and National Security Adviser: Recognizing the significance of security in fostering economic stability, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of information sharing to combat terrorism and emphasized security as a top priority.
  2. Held a Forum with Governors of the 36 States: President Tinubu stressed the need for unity among states and emphasized good governance as the key to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic future.
  3. Engaged Major Oil Marketers: President Tinubu met with representatives of major oil marketers, urging collaboration to meet the needs and demands of Nigerians. This resulted in a pledge by the Oil Marketers Association to donate mass transit buses to alleviate the impact of the subsidy removal.
  4. Negotiated with JOHESU: President Tinubu’s engagement with the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) resulted in the suspension of their 12-day strike, signaling progress in addressing the concerns of health workers.
  5. Reached Agreements with NLC: In a similar vein, President Tinubu successfully brokered agreements with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), averting planned strikes and protests related to the subsidy removal.
  6. Signed 2023 Electricity Bill into Law: The president’s signing of the 2023 Electricity Act enables state governments, companies, and individuals to generate, distribute, and sell electricity, thereby ushering in a new era of power sector reforms.
  7. Appointed Gbajabiamila as Chief of Staff: The president’s strategic appointment of former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, sets the tone for his administration and showcases his commitment to selecting capable individuals to drive Nigeria’s progress.
  8. Made Akume Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF): Senator George Akume’s appointment as SGF is expected to bring tremendous contributions to the nation, furthering President Tinubu’s vision for a more efficient and productive government.
  9. Met with Traditional Rulers: Recognizing their crucial role in fostering peace and unity, President Tinubu engaged traditional rulers, urging their support in promoting responsible behavior and patriotism while pledging his administration’s support for their cultural custodianship.
  10. Selected and Received Approval for 20 Special Advisers: President Tinubu’s careful selection of 20 Special Advisers, approved by the Senate, ensures his administration is equipped with competent individuals to tackle the nation’s challenges head-on.
  11. Initiated Financial Sector Reforms: In a bold move, President Tinubu suspended Godwin Emefiele as the Central Bank Governor, signaling his commitment to tackling corruption and initiating comprehensive investigations and reforms within the financial sector.
  12. Strengthened the Judiciary: President Tinubu assented to a bill that raises the retirement age for judicial officers, ensuring continuity and experience in the judiciary while enhancing efficiency and effectiveness.
  13. Fostered Collaboration with Opposition Leaders: Recognizing the importance of inclusivity and fair governance, President Tinubu engaged opposition leaders, emphasizing the need for cooperation and a shared vision of progress for Nigeria.
  14. Declared Fundamental Economic Reforms: President Tinubu made decisive declarations regarding subsidy removal, signaling his administration’s intention to undertake crucial economic reforms to stabilize the nation’s finances and stimulate sustainable growth.
  15. Appointed Acting Chairman of EFCC: To ensure continuity and accountability in the fight against corruption, President Tinubu appointed Abdulkarim Chukkol as the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
  16. Tinubu Signs Students’ Loan Bill Into Law: President Tinubu’s assent to the student loan bill, sponsored by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, allows indigent Nigerian students to access interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, opening doors to higher education for those in need.
  17. Tinubu Signs Data Protection Bill Into Law: President Tinubu’s signing of the Data Protection Act paves the way for the establishment of a full-fledged commission responsible for regulating personal data protection, fostering development in the digital economy sector, and creating job opportunities for thousands of Nigerians.
  18. Inaugurated the National Economic Council (NEC): Led by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, the council will support rapid and inclusive economic growth through well-reasoned policies and measures.
  19. New Leadership in the National Assembly: Godswill Akpabio elected as Senate President and Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

These remarkable achievements within a mere 16-day period have ignited a sense of optimism and hope among Nigerians. President Bola Tinubu’s swift and decisive actions demonstrate his unwavering commitment to addressing key issues and setting Nigeria on a path towards progress and prosperity.
