Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi has been appointed as the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), assuming the key role in the country’s financial landscape.

Shonubi, born on March 7, 1962, brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Lagos, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from 1978 to 1983. He further pursued a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Production Engineering at the same university in 1985.

With a keen interest in finance, Shonubi shifted his focus and earned a Master’s degree in Business Administration, specializing in Finance, from 1988 to 1989. His educational background equipped him with a strong foundation for his subsequent career endeavors.

Shonubi’s professional journey began as a Consultant Engineer at Mek-ind Associates, where he worked from 1984 to 1989. Following that, he served as a Marketing Executive at Inlaks Computers Limited from 1989 to 1990. In 1990, he joined Citibank Nigeria Limited as Head of Treasury Operations, making significant contributions to the financial institution until 1993.

His expertise and dedication led him to Agusto & Co. Ltd, where he worked as a Supervising Consultant from 1993 to 1996. Shonubi then assumed the role of Deputy General Manager, Banking Operations & Information Technology at MBC International Limited from 1999 to 2002. In 1999, he joined First City Monument Bank (FCMB) Limited as Vice-President, Operations & Information Technology, further enhancing his reputation in the banking sector.

In 2003, Shonubi joined Ecobank Nigeria Plc as an Executive Director, overseeing Operations & Information Technology. His capabilities were recognized, and in 2007, he became the Director of Information Technology and Corporate Services at Renaissance Securities Nigeria Limited. From September 2009 to April 2012, he served as an Executive Director, Operations, Technology, and Services at Union Bank of Nigeria Limited.

Shonubi’s leadership skills were instrumental when he assumed the position of Managing Director/CEO of Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc from May 2012 to October 2018. In addition, since December 9, 2019, he has been serving as the Deputy Governor, Operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), representing the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria on the Board of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Beyond his professional achievements, Shonubi is a family man, married with children. His appointment as the acting Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria reflects the trust and confidence placed in him to guide the nation’s financial sector during this transitional period.
