Enugu, April 20, 2023 – Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu has banned students from fixing artificial nails, eyelashes, and wearing revealing clothing such as tights on campus. The Vice Chancellor of the University, Rev. Fr. Christian Anieke, made the announcement on Thursday during an address to staff and students.
Rev. Fr. Anieke stated that the university will no longer tolerate distractions caused by inappropriate dressing, including short clothes, by both staff and students. He emphasized that only natural hair colors such as black and brown will be allowed on campus, and that students will be required to wear their faculty uniforms from Tuesdays to Fridays, as the liberty to wear cultural attire on Fridays has been abused.
Furthermore, Rev. Fr. Anieke declared that the exchange of pornographic materials is strictly prohibited within the institution, and such behavior will not be tolerated. He urged the staff to be proactive in covering their lectures, as the management will not accept any excuses for disruptions to the academic programs.
In addition, Rev. Fr. Anieke warned final year students against plagiarism, and announced that the university librarian has been directed to carry out plagiarism tests on all research works submitted by students and staff. He also encouraged students to report any staff who may hinder their progress in completing their projects.
The announcement was made during a virtual meeting attended by students and staff of Godfrey Okoye University and its group of institutions. Rev. Fr. Anieke gave the staff and students one month to adjust to the new dress code policy, and emphasized that the management is committed to upholding the university’s standards and values.
The implementation of the dress code policy has sparked mixed reactions among students, with some expressing support for the new rules as a way to maintain a professional and conducive learning environment, while others have raised concerns about the restriction of personal expression through dress. Nevertheless, the university management has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the policy is enforced, and has urged all stakeholders to comply with the rules and regulations of the institution.
