The Internally Displaced Persons residing in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, are urging the government and well-meaning individuals to provide them with food and other essential items.
The IDPs, comprising women, children, and men, have sought refuge in the capital city after being displaced from their respective communities by suspected terrorists. During the distribution of Ramadan welfare food items donated by former Governor Abdulaziz Yari, the IDPs queued to receive assorted grains. Kurisiyya Saminu, a 20-year-old mother, narrated how she had been doing odd jobs to feed her family since fleeing from Ruwan-gongo community after it was attacked by bandits.
The Zamfara Circle Initiative, a local humanitarian volunteer group, is responsible for distributing the food items to 14,000 IDPs across the state’s 14 Local Government Areas. The former governor donated thirty-two trucks of assorted food items to the group. Dr. Aminu Lawal, the Chairman of the group, called on well-meaning individuals in the state to support the initiative in alleviating the IDPs’ plight.
Salamatu Lawali from Rijiya community thanked the food donor and appealed to the government to assist the IDPs in their current situation. Each displaced person receives a 50kg bag of grains as a Ramadan welfare package from the former Governor.
