New data has shown that the number of verified Twitter users paying for Twitter Blue subscriptions is likely to be far lower than Elon Musk expected.
While Twitter is set to remove legacy verification checkmarks and promote paying subscribers via its recommendation algorithm on the For You feed, researcher Travis Brown has found that around half of all Twitter Blue subscribers have less than 1,000 followers, and 78,059 paying subscribers have less than 100 users following their account.
Brown’s data indicates that Twitter Blue currently has a total of 444,435 paying subscribers, accounting for less than 0.2% of Twitter’s 254 million daily active users. While the subscription service offers additional features such as tweet editing, it remains to be seen whether Twitter’s decision to remove legacy verification checkmarks and promote paying subscribers will encourage more users to sign up.
