The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the north-west has called for the resignation of Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Abubakar Malami, minister of justice, following a recent supreme court ruling that old naira notes are legal tender until December 31, 2023.
The CBN had introduced new N200, N500, and N1,000 notes on December 23, 2022, with a deadline of February 10 for the use of old notes, despite a temporary injunction by the supreme court.
The party claims that the redesign policy created a cash crunch that impacted citizens, and accuses President Muhammadu Buhari of being misled into “illegality and abuse of executive power”.
In a statement, Salihu Lukman, vice-chairman of the APC in the north-west, has urged Emefiele and Malami to resign from their offices for violating the law and breaching the constitution of Nigeria.
The party also commended Nigerians for resisting the efforts of subversive politicians who aimed to inflict hardship and pain on citizens to provoke them against the APC during the 2023 elections.
