Dr. Thabo Mbeki, the former President of South Africa and Head of Commonwealth Observer Mission to Nigeria, visited President-elect Asíwájú Bola Tinubu in his Abuja residence on Thursday.
During the meeting, Mbeki urged Tinubu to keep Africa in mind when he assumes office and make the entire continent his priority.
Mbeki highlighted Nigeria’s importance as the most populous country in Africa with a big economy, and stressed that a strong Nigerian presidency is necessary for the development of the African region.
Tinubu assured Mbeki of his commitment to African integration and economic development, and promised to work with him and other African leaders towards achieving these goals. He also requested Mbeki’s continued support and guidance, saying “Please Mr. President, don’t be far from us.” Mbeki also reminded Tinubu of the challenges of democracy and the need to stay vigilant.
