The presidential election in Nigeria is currently underway, with Bola Tinubu, the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), leading the race according to official results from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Tinubu has garnered 8,805,835 votes, as reported by state collation officers for the presidential election (SCOPs) before the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, at the National Collation Centre in Abuja.
In second place is Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with 6,984,640 votes, followed closely by Peter Obi of the Labour Party with 6,096,017 votes and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) with 1,499,303 votes.
Tinubu won in 12 states, Obi won 11 states plus the Federal Capital Territory, Atiku won 12 states, while Kwankwaso won in one state. The final declaration of results and the announcement of the winner is expected soon by the INEC chair.
According to Section 134 of the Nigerian Constitution, a presidential candidate must have the majority of votes cast at the election, and not less than one-quarter of the votes cast at the election in at least two-thirds of all the States in the Federation and the FCT to be declared the winner.
If no candidate meets this requirement, a second election will be held as per Sub-section 3 of the same section.
