INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu announced on Friday in Abuja that the election in Enugu East Senatorial District has been suspended due to the assassination of the Labour Party’s senatorial candidate, Oyibo Chukwu.
The election, originally scheduled for February 25, 2023, will now take place on March 11, 2023. The Labour Party has informed INEC of its intention to replace Chukwu and participate in the election on the new date.
This request is in accordance with Section 34, Sub-Section 1 of the Electoral Act 2022. INEC has already communicated the decision to the Enugu State office, and the electoral materials will remain in the custody of the Central Bank of Nigeria until the new date.
