According to Adakole Ijogi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Middle Belt Forum has instructed its people to vote for Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the upcoming election.
Ijogi, who is also a political economist, stated that he will be voting for Obi and expressed skepticism about the chances of his own party’s flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar.
He explained that the Middle Belt Forum’s decision transcends political parties, and the people of the region have suffered greatly in recent years due to various issues such as killings and kidnappings.
The Middle Belt Forum, along with other regional groups such as Afenifere, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and Pan Niger Delta Forum, had previously endorsed Obi. Ijogi claimed that approximately 50% of PDP members will not be voting for Atiku and instead will be voting for Obi, who he believes stands out among the other candidates.
He also stated that Obi has made significant strides in the Middle Belt and is likely to receive votes that previously went to the PDP. Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has already endorsed Obi for President.
Finally, Ijogi highlighted the low likelihood of the Middle Belt voting for the PDP in the upcoming election, citing the areas that the Peter Obi movement has occupied.
