South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, agreed on Tuesday to deepen cooperation between their nations, leveraging South Korea’s technological prowess and Angola’s abundant natural resources.
Their summit, held in Seoul during Lourenço’s three-day visit – the first by an Angolan leader in over two decades – focused on expanding bilateral ties.
President Yoon highlighted Korea’s strengths in technology and economic development, noting Korean involvement in building key Angolan facilities and the contribution of Korean-built ships to Angola’s oil industry. He expressed hope for deeper collaboration based on these complementary strengths.
President Lourenço echoed this sentiment, acknowledging various areas for potential cooperation and expressing Angola’s desire to learn from Korea’s rapid economic rise. Angola boasts significant reserves of oil, diamonds, iron ore, and other minerals.
The summit aimed to solidify the foundation of South Korea-Angola relations, according to Yoon’s office. It culminated in the signing of five memorandums of understanding, covering areas like trade and investment promotion, healthcare, cultural exchange, law enforcement cooperation, and trade expansion.
President Lourenço’s visit, coming just a month before the inaugural Korea-Africa summit in June.
