Dublin, Ireland – Ireland is contemplating revoking visa-free travel for South African citizens in an effort to curb the rise in asylum applications.
This move comes amidst concerns about potential misuse of South African passports by individuals from Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo seeking entry to Ireland for asylum purposes.
Irish authorities report that 198 asylum seekers arrived in Ireland this year using South African passports, representing over 3% of all asylum applicants so far in 2024.
The potential revocation of visa-free travel for South Africans follows reports of individuals allegedly exploiting the current system. South African passport holders currently enjoy visa-free entry to 108 countries, a privilege that could be impacted by Ireland’s decision.
This wouldn’t be the first time a European nation restricted entry for South Africans. The United Kingdom implemented visa requirements for South African passport holders in 2009 due to similar security concerns.
Ireland, however, has maintained a visa-free entry scheme for South Africa until now. This benefit could be revoked if Ireland chooses to tighten its immigration measures.
With over 5,000 asylum applications received this year, and anticipating a potential increase in the coming months, Ireland is seeking to implement stricter controls on entry.
