Freetown, Sierra Leone – April 27, 2024 – Sierra Leone commemorated its 63rd year of independence today, reflecting on its journey since gaining freedom in 1961.
President Julius Maada Bio addressed the nation, praising the sacrifices of those who fought for independence. “Today, we honor the heroes who secured our freedom and sovereignty,” he declared.
The President acknowledged ongoing challenges but emphasized progress and national unity. “Our journey continues,” he said, “and together we will build a brighter, more inclusive Sierra Leone for all.”

The United States joined the nation in celebrating this milestone. Secretary of State Antony Blinken offered congratulations and highlighted Sierra Leone’s commitment to peace and democracy. “We value your dedication to stability and strengthening democratic institutions,” Blinken stated in a press release. He emphasized the US-Sierra Leone partnership, particularly their collaboration on the UN Security Council.
“We share a vision for a brighter future for Sierra Leone,” Blinken concluded, “and look forward to deepening our partnership in the coming year.”
