South African Airways (SAA) celebrated the much-anticipated return of its Johannesburg-Perth route on Sunday, despite a recent setback in securing a major cash injection.
Derek Hanekom, chairperson of SAA’s interim board, acknowledged the airline’s past financial struggles and the collapse of a planned R3 billion investment by the Takatso Consortium. However, he emphasized SAA’s commitment to “sustainable growth” and its ability to move forward without the additional funding.
“We are not in a crisis,” Hanekom declared. “This route reinstatement is part of our strategy, with or without additional investors.” He credited Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan for his unwavering support in keeping SAA afloat.

The Perth route, nicknamed “The Wallaby Route” in its 1957 inception, holds historical significance for both nations. David Geyer, Australia’s deputy high commissioner to South Africa, highlighted the strong economic ties between the countries, with R40 billion annually exchanged in goods and services. He also noted the significant South African expatriate population in Australia, estimated at 350,000.

The return of the Joburg-Perth connection is seen as a positive step for tourism and trade. Judy Nkowedi, chairperson of the Gauteng Tourism Authority, pointed to potential business opportunities, particularly in mining, between South Africa and Australia’s “billionaires belt” along the Murray River.
As CEO Professor John Lamola stated, “We are celebrating the rollout of a clear strategy for SAA’s future.” The reinstated Perth route marks a significant milestone in this journey.
