President Cyril Ramaphosa commemorated Freedom Day 2024 with a poignant address at the Union Buildings in Tshwane on April 27. Joined by dignitaries including Deputy President Shipokosa Paul Mashatile and former President Thabo Mbeki, President Ramaphosa delivered a stirring speech reflecting on the significance of this historic day.

Opening his address with greetings in various South African languages, President Ramaphosa evoked the spirit of unity that permeated the nation exactly thirty years ago when freedom’s bell rang across the land. He vividly recounted how the echoes of freedom reverberated from Musina to Soweto, from Sharpeville to Khayelitsha, symbolizing the liberation of a nation long oppressed.

Reflecting on the monumental journey since the dawn of democracy, President Ramaphosa paid homage to the stalwarts who championed the struggle for justice, peace, and freedom. In particular, he honored the legacy of Nelson Mandela, whose vision and leadership paved the way for a new, free South Africa.

Acknowledging the deep scars inflicted by centuries of colonialism and apartheid, President Ramaphosa emphasized the transformative power of democracy in restoring the dignity of all South Africans. He underscored the progress made in bridging divides of wealth and opportunity, despite persistent challenges such as unemployment and poverty.

President Ramaphosa highlighted the strides towards gender equality and empowerment, recognizing the pivotal role of women in shaping South Africa’s democratic landscape. He celebrated the advances in education, healthcare, and social development, affirming the government’s commitment to uplifting the marginalized and vulnerable.

Addressing the enduring legacy of apartheid, President Ramaphosa reiterated the nation’s resolve to overcome inequalities and build a future of shared prosperity. He called upon all South Africans to unite in realizing the promise of freedom and to work together towards a brighter tomorrow.

In closing, President Ramaphosa invoked the words of Nelson Mandela, affirming that the sun shall never set on the glorious achievement of South Africa’s democracy. With a call for unity and perseverance, he instilled hope for a future where freedom reigns supreme, and every South African can thrive.
