On April 24, 2024, a high-profile Malaysian delegation, led by the Malaysian Special Envoy on Afghanistan and comprising representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Interior, alongside advisors from the Prime Minister’s office, convened with Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA).
The purpose behind the visit of this esteemed delegation to Kabul was to foster and broaden bilateral relations between Malaysia and Afghanistan. Commencing the discussions, the Malaysian Foreign Minister conveyed a message to FM Muttaqi, emphasizing the significance of the existing diplomatic, religious, cultural, and economic ties between the two nations.
Muttaqi reciprocated this sentiment, acknowledging the continuous expansion of relations and expressing gratitude for Malaysia’s longstanding goodwill, particularly in providing humanitarian aid, notably in the aftermath of the recent earthquake in Herat. Additionally, he shed light on Afghanistan’s pursuit of a balanced, economy-centric policy, fostering trade and investment opportunities across various sectors.
Highlighting Afghanistan’s growing engagement with the international community, especially with neighboring and regional countries, Muttaqi reiterated the nation’s eagerness to enhance ties with South Asian nations. He specifically appealed to the Malaysian government to ensure the welfare of the 3,000 Afghan residents in Malaysia, emphasizing the importance of access to healthcare and education.
In response, the Malaysian delegation affirmed their government’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations across diverse domains. Mrs. Dato Doctor Shazlina, a member of the delegation, expressed optimism about the political landscape in Afghanistan and announced Malaysia’s intention to send a trade delegation in the near future.
