Lagos, Nigeria – April 24, 2024 – The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the South African High Commission in Lagos co-hosted a discussion on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of fostering social cohesion and unity between the two nations. The event marked the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and South Africa.

Professor Bola Oboh, representing UNILAG’s Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the enduring legacy of cooperation between the countries in areas like national development, regional stability, and cultural exchange. She emphasized the need to learn from past diplomatic strains and set new goals for a stronger partnership.

“Nigeria-South Africa relations should be intentional, driving regional development and achieving a greater global impact,” Professor Oboh stressed.

South African High Consulate’s Consul General Bobby Moroe commended UNILAG for its leadership in education. He pointed to the shared aspirations and interests of both nations, urging stakeholders to leverage these similarities for mutual benefit. Moroe called for collaboration to address poverty and inequality, while promoting capacity building for accelerated national growth.

The event featured keynote speeches by Professor David Aworawo and Dr. Kayode Eesuola, both from UNILAG. Professor Aworawo explored the history of unbroken diplomatic relations, while Dr. Eesuola focused on the role of higher education institutions in shaping future collaboration between the two countries. Representatives from South African universities also delivered goodwill messages.

Nigeria and South Africa established diplomatic relations on February 21, 1994, predating South Africa’s Independence Day on April 27th of the same year.
