The United Arab Emirates concluded a productive week at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) Spring Meetings in Washington D.C. The UAE delegation, led by Minister of State for Financial Affairs Mohamed bin Hadi Al Hussaini, participated in discussions on a wide range of global challenges.

Al Hussaini emphasized the importance of international collaboration in finding solutions for sustainable development. He highlighted the need for swift action on issues like poverty and climate change. He called for a new action plan to address poverty emergencies and advocated for improved efficiency within the World Bank to expedite project funding, particularly in vital sectors like energy, water, healthcare, and digital infrastructure.

The UAE also championed debt relief for struggling economies and advocated for new tools to manage future crises through partnerships between development institutions and the private sector.

Turning to global recovery, Al Hussaini expressed concern for fragile states disproportionately affected by ongoing geopolitical tensions and tighter global financial conditions. He underlined the need for multilateral cooperation to ensure food and energy security, bolster trade, and support climate adaptation efforts.

The UAE showcased its leadership on climate change by highlighting the landmark UAE Consensus achieved at COP28. This agreement includes a historic commitment to triple renewable energy production, double global energy efficiency, and end deforestation by 2030.

The UAE delegation also participated in regional discussions with representatives from the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAP). The focus of these discussions was on maintaining macroeconomic stability, debt sustainability, managing geopolitical challenges, and fostering long-term growth prospects. Additionally, the UAE participated in G20 meetings on reimagining finance for climate goals and strengthening international financial architecture.

The 2024 Spring Meetings brought together global leaders to discuss pressing issues like the world economic outlook, poverty eradication, and financial system stability.
